Technology has influenced the healthcare system tremendously. Information technology is viewed as an imperative tool to enhance health care services (Hemmat, Ayatollahi, Maleki, & Saghafi, 2017). As technology has advanced in health care, patient outcomes have improved. Present technology has improved the quality of life by developing mechanical ventilators, correcting deformities and replacing diseased organs (Burkhardt & Nathaniel, 2014). The focus of this discussion post is to describe the two types of information technology incidents, and how they impact the patient and health care organization. Lastly, it will promote ways nurses can use health information technology efficiently and safely.After reviewing the article there are two distinct types of problems that can arise within the information technology environment. Errors can be purely computer based or they can be caused through the interaction of humans with computers. Computer-Related Issues encompass failures with the system interfaces, safety issues associated with the system’s hardware or software configurations, or an unintended error due to faulty or incomplete programming (Wallace, Zimmer, Possanza, Giannini & Solomon, 2013). Human-Computer Issues deal with incorrect input into the system or the misinterpretation of output that had been correctly evaluated by the computer system. In short, it is human error in a computer environment (Wallace et al., 2013). The case study presents a situation in which hospital records had been abridged by the computer and not as complete as the information from the paper hospital record. As the result of the incomplete information, confusion arose between extended-release morphine and a lower dose of immediate-release morphine.Both had shared the label “morphine” because critical information had been cut off from the display. The almost-tragic event that ensued from the situation was that a patient who complained of pain was incorrectly given both doses simultaneously and suffered an overdose of morphine. Fortunately, the patient recovered after being intubated, and resuscitated (Wallace et al., 2013). This was an interesting case study and in my point of view there was two information technology problems that occurred. On the surface, it appears it is a computer-related error because the order was followed exactly as it was given, but pertinent information about the dosage and schedule of the medication in the display was cut off. In addition, the computer system failed to warn the nurse that the dose being given was a concern. To a certain extent, there is also some human factor involved because nobody noticed the overdosing or called the doctor to verify the order. The potential consequence to the patient in this case study is that the patient could have possibly died. Due to its danger’s, morphine should be dispensed much more carefully under any situation. Vigilance is needed to protect patients and make sure they are not harmed by the use of health care technologies (Burkhardt & Nathaniel, 2014). Advancement of technology will continue to develop in health care and enhance the quality of life. However, there is still possibility for errors to occur. A greater degree of safety can be established by comparing the orders that were put in the eMAR to the paper MARs. Each order in the computer system should be examined to determine whether pertinent information is lost in the translation between the two system. Health information technology is thought of as a reassuring area of technological development and applying methods such as forecasting and fore sighting in the future will enhance effective application of health information technology (Hemmat et al., 2017).
