Self leadership

Self leadership can be defined in differently. Some scholars define it as the course through which an individual ascertain the personal direction that he will take and the personal inspiration that he will need so as to execute his self-duties. Other scholars define it as a perceptive and planned approach to personal development that offers him with lifetime means that he can use to access his further interior and exterior resources through his self-direction path and accomplish his vision.

You should set yourself life goals that not only affect your life standards but also your whole life.

Motivation can be defined as the motive(s) that an individual has for conducting him in a particular way.

Rebuild by engaging in relationships: you should sacrifice your business on the altar of your close family members. It should be an alarm-button if you can be in a position to sustain business but unable to maintain the relationship with the very family members at home (kith and kin).

Copying other leaders: you should suit the examples of your role models whom you like their leadership but you should first assess them before copying them.

Taking a day off from work: you should at take a vacation of a day from your normal work and seclude yourself in a place that you can not be disturbed (not even reached by communication means) and go over the course of your life.

Counsel a person: you will realize that you are heading in the right direction after a person comes to you seeking advice. It is always said, you are the problem and you are also the solution. Remember what it is said over and over again, hard decisions call for hard solutions.

Motivation theories

Motivation theories split both the internal and external forces of motivation.

Motivation resulting from challenges: people who are straining to accomplish the individual objectives are motivated by difficult situations but they soldier on because they know that those barriers can be overcome and their goals accomplished. This is attained by making the aims achievable; initiating the objectives that are individually important; sidelining the objectives with personal self reputation and presenting the response on the progress.

Motivation resulting from curiosity: in this theory, there is something within the person that makes him curious. This is accomplished by providing the individual with an attractive thing. In short if one is motivated by curiosity, there is an attractive and desirable stimulant (Maddock Richard, 1998).


Motivation arising from control: quite a number of people believe and want to experience being at the helm of their future. They must therefore comprehend the reasons and the consequences between an act and the end result. Leadership skills improvement

Leadership is unlocking people potential so that they may become better and improve productivity. For one to be a leader, there are several skills that one must have in order to achieve the leadership role. Many believe that leadership is all about giving orders and setting tasks to the people that they are serving. However, a great leader should have the following skills;

Passionate – Just like a disease passion is infectious and it inspires other people especially the senior people, to work hard in spite of the challenges they face. They admire the leader and embrace whatever the leader offers to them in terms of services and ideas. A good leader should therefore have the self drive to work and face challenges without fear.

A great leader should also be willing to assign tasks to his or her junior staff and also trusting them with the work that he has assigned to them. When a leader shows confidence in his staff members they get motivated and they are able to work with minimal supervision. Further more when duties are equally delegated it reduces the work load plus people get to learn ideas from their leaders.

Communication is a very important aspect in our lives since it helps us to understand one another by sharing ideas. Without communication there could be minimal development in everything that we do. Therefore a great leader should communicate the objectives that need to be achieved to the staff members so that they may know their roles. Some acknowledgment from the leader is also crucial since employees will feel appreciated in their work.

Good relations between leaders and the employees’ should be enhanced so as to improve cooperation and coordination in the organization. Communication also aims at helping a leader to enhance team work in the organization which will result in improved productivity.


A great leader should also be able to listen to other employees, so as to get their views on what should be improved and also listen to their problems. This should help him to motivate the employees by addressing their problems, applying their ideas to see if they are workable in improving the services of the company. A leader who depends wholly on his views and ideas without consulting his employees’ is doomed to fail since some of his policies will be self centered. Better listening leads to efficiency in responding to issues that are raised by the employees.

A good leader must know his employees, characters, weaknesses and also their lives outside the work place so that they may find a common ground of how to handle them. Knowledge of the employees’ lives will help a leader to evaluate and understand those situations that may affect the employees’ performance at workplace. For instance, a great leader will be able to note the hardworking employees’ and assign them more duties to enhance productivity.

Strong organizational skills are vital to a great leader since it portrays a good example to the other employees’. For instance a leader should observe time, meet deadlines to duties assigned, and have well organized workforce so as to enhance productivity. When this is achieved other employees will be able to follow the footsteps of their leader and be responsible of their duties.

Great leaders take ownership and responsibility of the duties delegated to their employees’. They are able to encourage their employees’ to be productive since they oversee and control those duties hence boosting the employees’ confidence. They are also bold and take risks on behalf of the employees so as to increase productivity.

Most leaders rely on their own energy’s and technical skills to achieve fundamental leadership skills that will assist them realize their full potential. However, for one to develop good leadership skills it is important for them to undergo some training so that they may acquire the skills required to be promoted to leadership positions. Some of these skills are not in-born with therefore leaders take typical programs whereby they learn how to resolve conflicts, improve employee performance, coaching for results, to embrace change and building effective teams to enhance productivity. Leaders should understand and combine leadership principles with technical and functional abilities to achieve their organizational goals and objectives.

Leaders should be flexible to any ideas and opinions from other employees in the organization. They should also have the ability to forecast problems that may disrupt or lower the productivity. Challenges should act as motivators to leaders since it should help them prevent future problems from occurring in the organization. A leader who is creative helps the organization in coming up with new ventures that will assist the organization to increase its productivity level.

Others ways that leaders should use to improve their leadership skills include; monitoring of other organizations progress and the market at large so as to note the changes that are needed in their organization. These will enhance competition between different organizations in the market therefore improving the services rendered to customers.


A good leader should do some evaluation before embarking on leading the other employees in the organization. A leader should search within his inner self to find out that which motivates him. Whatever element that gives him renewed energy should be well used in impacting the other elements in his leadership position. A leader should set aside some private time in the course of the day whereby he reflects on his life and how and his hopes for the future. This will help him in making those crucial decisions without too much pressure.

A good leader should also visualize and set realistic goals that are not so out of reach but achievable. The set goals should be high such that the leader is motivated to work hard so as to achieve them within the stipulated time. The goals should be reviewed frequently to monitor the progress one is making towards meeting the set goals. However, not all set goals can be achieved and therefore a great leader should not be discouraged when one goal fails. He should always have an alternative plan that should act as a cover up to the failed plan.

Leaders should work closely with any successful leader who mentors him or her, in order to borrow ideas and learn from their success. The mentor should help the leader to grow in hi personal leadership capabilities by guiding and correcting them whenever they go wrong. A leader should also engage himself with meaningful seminars, workshops, and presentations that will help him improve his skills as a leader. Periodical reassessment of leadership skills and abilities is also vital in monitoring the progress of one’s leadership skills.

Leadership development is a self responsibility that one is entitled to achieve since a person is able to know his or her limitations, understanding and capabilities of his current skills therefore noting the areas where to improve on. To achieve this a leader should design a personal leadership skills improvement plan that includes experimental and practical applications.
